Fueling The Fire
The Olympic Torch Comes to San Francisco
Story and Photos by John Russo

In 2001, the Olympic Committee awarded Beijing the 2008 Summer Games. Traditionally, as the games approach commencement, the Olympic flame is lit and travels around the world to represent international peace and unity. However, since the announcement of China's role as host to the Summer Olympics, groups have geared up to put pressure on China by shedding light on their domestic and International policies.

The 2008 Olympic Games have transformed from a unifying event to a contentious political debate, and San Francisco was the North American staging ground for those having grievances with China. What traditionally would be a day of celebration and international unity evolved into a bitter yelling match between adversaries.

When the day began the Embarcadero was flanked by portable barricades along the published torch route. By late morning, protestors had poured into the streets in packs of 50 to 100s. Each roamed up and down the Embarcadero chanting in unison the focus of their indignation. China supporters were more than happy to fuel the fire and both sides faced, off inches apart as they bitterly exchanged points of view.

When the day was said and done, the protestors came out on top. They had succeeded in preventing China from receiving the glory and satisfaction of witnessing the Olympic torch pass through San Francisco's streets.
